| 10 January 2009: Dropgates |
The 2 long dropgates are pretty rusty along the bottom, so they came off today in order to ases the damage. I have a 2nd set of dropgates. They are slightly les rusty, but they are bent and have some dents in them. But for the time being they will have to make do.
They were painted with a woodstock/make love not war desing a few years ago for the VWoodstock show. I'm not sure if they'll stay that way, but it's to cold outside to paint them anyway.

took me a while to get there though. we came accross a section of belgian road that was REALLY bumpy. so a lot of rust particles in my fueltank decided it was time to go swimming, which blocked up the fuel filter and carb. took about 45 minutes on the hard shoulder to clean everything and we had to boost the 6V system with a 12V batery to get it running again. but i made it to the show and back home again. bob even stopped to tell me about the new fueltanks he's selling at BBT :D |

we got really lucky with the weather at the VW meeting in Middelburg. it didn't start to rain until they started to hand out the awards (i got to take one home!). cruised back home in the rain. by the time we got there it was dry again and we had a very nice BBQ

thereare some setbacks with the dicsbrake kit, so in orderto get a fresh APK (MOT) i needed to do some work on the drumbrakes. the left front needed almost everything new. thanks for the help okrassa-geezer!

I picked up the new wheels last night. They are steel Lemmertz wheels originally made for a Porsche 912. They should look pretty cool on the pickup, but first the brakes need to be upgraded (Porsche 944 discs up front). More info on that in a few weeks time.

| 24 August 2006: The engine is in! |
| Last night we finally managed to get the 1600 engine into the pickup! It runs, but there are still a lot of little jobs that need sorting. So I won't be taking it to the show in Spa this weekend. |
| 14 August 2006: The 1600cc engine saga |
The new (1600cc) engine has been ready for a few months, but somehow we hadn't been able to get around to fitting it in the pickup. The weather foarecast for last weekend was pretty bad, so we decided not to go to Bitburg. Plan B: fit the engine!
The gearbox on the pickup is for a 109 teeth flywheel. The new engine had a 130 teeth flywheel. we couldn't swap it over, as the bit that sits over the crank is shaped differently. the boys at BBT had a propper unit in stock, so we cruised down to get it (and a new clutch). After an afternoon of bolting bits together it turns out that the new flywheel wasn't to the same spec as was written on the box!! :-(
They are now gona machine a 109 unit down so it will fit over the new model crank. should be finished in a few days |

| Managed to finish the other side of the pickup. All the pinstripes around the flames are now on. I also cleaned out the lower locker. It's amazing how much stuff fits in there, so you can expect to find a lot of stuff in there that can be thrown away. I've now got some more room for camping gear |

The lower part of the V in the front panel is now covered in fresh paint. It's not 100% the right shade of gray, but I've got a trick up my sleave to try and 'blend' it in with the rest of the truck.

The old pickup neede some TLC. So the chassis has been given a coat of red-oxide primer and the drivers-dogleg and the passengers-door are now less rusty then before. Next up the rust under the headlights and a small restyle in order to "hide" the non matching paint.

I used most of sunday to recover the seat in the pickup. There already was a tigerskin design in there, but that was just a fleece plaid which was safety-pinned on. Now it's got 2 propper seatcovers out of fabric (less stretchy then the fleece.

Spend saturday at a BIG vintage car/bike show in germany (Techno Classica in Essen). Lot's of nice cars on display and parts to buy. Almost no pinstriped cars out there. Just a few really old cars with the very early stuf (just straight lines to accentuate the shape of the car). I did manage to buy some 1-shot from a guy selling beugelers.

The DIY steeringbox guard worked well for a while, but it wasn't sturdy enough to withstand the impact of the road whilst going around a corner. it got bent sideways.
New from boatyardbusses is this stainless bit of kit. Rather easy to fit (altough i had to bend one of the brackets a bit) and it works rather good.

I've been a fan of the POP-range of Swatch watches for years now. You can just wear them with a wristband like any other watch, but you can also use a special clip to clip it onto a piece of clothing.
The only problem is that the cross-brases on these clips break after a few years and then the watch isn't held on as strongly as before. This happend again, so i started looking on the web for somebody who would sell me a new clip. I've found this great webstore that sells all kinds of clips and POP Swatches. Even from the older collections (they have new designs every year). So I ended up buying not only a new clip, but also another new watch :-)

| 03 April 2006: VolksWorld Show |
visited the volksworld show over in london (uk) this weekend. it's a big VW show with all kind of aircooled VWs on display and lot's of trade stands. one of them was of prosign. neil was asked to do some talks on the pinstriping (a quick intro for general public). they were expecting about 2 dozen of people to show up for each session, but the ones on saturday both drew more then a 100 people!! neil realised that the people at the back would be able to see anything so he got us crazy enough to use our brushes in front of a big crowd. i hadn't held a brush for nearly 2 months, so i was a bit rusty. still good fun though.

I just got back from a week long snowboard trip in the south east of France. Val Cenis on the border with Italy. A nice resort, but the beds and room layout in hotel nanook are very bad! the food on the other hand was very good.

I've been cruising all over europe with my pickup for the last 5 years. but as i'm usually the slowest of our group i've been looking into getting some more top speed.
i've just bought a 2nd hand 1500cc H-engine
once i get around to picking it up from the previous owner, i can start working on it. the plan sofar:
new cylinders and pistons (probaly 1600cc units)
reconditioned heads
new manifold (the heather tubes tend to block up)
a 6V conversion

| 15 July 2005: Tiki T-shifter |
Cut some fresh bamboo from the back garden to make into a T-piece to top off the tiki style shifter-rod-cover i'd made a few weeks ago. The thread is a piece of tube with on 1 end a flange with 4 spikes on. That wasn't solif enough, so i melted some lead and filled the inside of the bamboo with lead. There is about 200 grams of metal in there, that will give me some extra throw through the gears :-)

| 12 June 2005: Worked on the pickup |
my headlight problem turned out to be a broken relais. that's what can happen if you use NOS 6V electrical components. all fixed now, should get an MOT tomorrow.
also fitted a 3rd "safety star" brakelight. somehow it lights up a fraction earlier then my normal breaklights. :-)
also fitted some new shock at the back and greased the front axle. one of the nipples came off, the thread was really bad. we fixed it with an oversized bolt which was drilled/tapped out with thread in which we fitted a slightly smaller size nipple. |

I visited the 'Molentocht' today. A local vintage car event. This year extra big due to '600 years Goes' ('Goes' is the host city for this event). Extra attractions this year were extra cars & vintage airplanes.

after i finished pinstriping them clogs last night (see below), i got all my new tins of paint open so i could add a bit of color to the tops of the tins (makes it so much easier to tell them apart).
whilst i had them open, i figured i'd used the bit of paint that was already on my brush, so i started doodling on a panel. in the end i like the design, but not the color combo.

Cruised over to Lucjy Lenn's in Rotterdam to buy some One-Shot paint for my pinstriping. Nice people and some cool stuff they've got over there (hot rod, tiki, mooneyes, pinstripe, lowrider bikes).

I've just got back from a snowboard trip to the slopes in Serre Chevalier (Fr). The first half of the week was very sunny, the rest of the week was full of snow! 30cm of powder!!!

Bought myself a cheap clock on the weekend. Gave it a quick yellow basecoat with a spraycan and i then added some pinstriping. The big black element in the top center wasn't such a smart move though, as the dails of the clock are black as well. makes it a bit tricky to read the correct time :-)

| 20 November 2004: pinstripe design for my snowboard |
I've made a test piece for the design i wana pinstripe on the tail of my snowboard. the yellow lines match the edges of my board (it has 3D design, so there are some more lines in there then you might expect). the board it's self is red with aluminium letters, so i figured a darker red and metallic silver paint would be nice and subtle. gona tweak the design a bit more, getting the symetrical bit right is still the thoughest.

| 10 October 2004: Pinstriped toolbox version 2 |
I decided to spray my toolbox black again, so i could try to pinstripe it a second time. With the help of some pencil guidlines i was able to get a much more symetrical result. The pencil i used is a "Stablio All", which works on most surfaces and it's not wax based so it won't react with the paint.

| 09 October 2004: Ready for hibernation |
Took friday off from work and cruised over to Hans' place. The man's got a hydrolic lift, so it's much easier to work on the chassis. Replaced the worn front shocks with some new white Kyb items. These new ones work both ways, much better not it's so low. We also upgraded the fusebox, a much needed upgrade as the 6V jalogene bulbs kept melting the stock fusebox. The chassis under the cab got a fresh coat of paint and we made a skidplate for the steeringbox. Based on an old brakeshoe from an oval, it bolted almost straight on, just bend a piece of steel and weld it on the back. The other side of the support bar is bolted onto one of the bolts that hold the steeringbox in place.

Got myself a propper pinstripe-brush via prosign and today i finally had some free time to try it. Boy does that make a difference! It's much easier to get thin lines. Simmetry is still al problem though, but then again it's all done freehand (still haven't found a pencil that works on slick black surfaces). |

Got how to find a big envelope full of snowboarding stickers courtesy of www.dutchsnow.nl. So i was straight out of the door again, both cars now cary an extra sticker. Just to bad the orange stickers clash with the bright red of my snowboard. Gota figure out how to fix that problem.

| I'd had been a while, but last night snowboarding session was just what the docter ordered. Just to bad they put up a slalom piste half way through my session. Woke up this morning and straight away noticed a few muscles i forgot i had. Must hit the slopes more often. |

| 02 August 2004: DAS Drag Days 2004 |
It was slightly to hot for me, but it sure added to the california vibe that was already hanging over the show (plenty of yank iron to beat due to the us army base next door).
in the end only about 10 uk busses showed up. there were 27 of them on the cheap crossing, but most didn't bother to drive to bitburg rikki and andy only did 1 run, both a 17.5the other 2 uk busses made runs in the 19s.
Vincent (beltek bus) wanted to break the 18 so he could get into the BWA. he had about 8 runs. all sub 18.1, but never that elusive sub 18 run!! he's gota invest in a berg shifter
The old speed challenge (enige must have a fixed alternator stand) had 6 entries. the guy with a blue printed stock 30 horse engine beat all the guys with turbo's en okrassa kits. his trick: don't use the clutch !!

Went to pick up the singlecab at BBTs today. They lowered it a bit for me.Up front they used 3.5 inch dropped spindles from slammedpanel.com and 175/55/15 tires from the back of a smart add another 2 inches.At the back it's been dropped by 1 spline. Looks very good and still cruises ok.

I've taken all the flower power stickers of the van. It took a bit longer then i expected, good thing i waxed the van prior to putting them on. The old dropgates are also bolted back on to the truck. All that reminds me of the show is the peace sign out front. Gona swap that for the VW logo on the weekend.

This weekend the Dutch VW Bus Club organised their spring meet in Burgh-Haamstede on the beautifull coast in Zeeland.
The sun was shining and it's only 20km from my house, so the ideal oportunity to get the pickup out of wintre storage (which needed a new batery and some frech fuel down the carb to come back to life). One of the main attractions was a visit to the bakery/lunchroom/snackbar of the Sonnemans brothers. These guys have a big aircooled VW collection.

Anyone with gasoline in their veins should see the new Luc Besson movie 'Michel Vaillant'. It's based on the famous comicbooks by Jean Greaton and it's full of cool race scene's (most of the picture was recorded during the 2003 edition of 24hrs of Le Mans)
it's not playing in dutch theaters right now, but i live close to the belgian border. so i watched it in antwerp. |

I bought a bowlingpin light the other week in Utrecht and i added the stripes last night. I used a dark blue and white for the pinstripes. When you switch the light on, the whole color contrast changes!
